Jiu Jitsu Gear Checklist

So here is a quick Jiu Jitsu Gear Bag Checklist from all the jiujitsu gear discussed in the video.

Jiu Jitsu Foam Roller:

Using foam rollers for jiu jitsu practice is like trying to put out a fire with a squirt gun – it may provide some temporary relief, but the flames will soon reignite.

Take for example, my training partner “Bob”. Bob was a tough guy, never complained about any aches or pains. But the minute he started using a foam roller after practice, he transformed into a whimpering mess. Every time he’d roll over a particularly sore spot, he’d let out a blood-curdling scream, causing the entire gym to stop and stare.

Despite the embarrassment, Bob was a foam roller convert. He claimed it was like having a personal masseuse, except this masseuse didn’t offer happy endings and left him feeling even more sore.

But the real test came when we had a competition. Bob was feeling confident, he’d been using his foam roller every day, and he was ready to take on all comers. That was until his first match, when he tried to bridge and nearly dislocated his shoulder. It was then that he realized foam rollers were like a band-aid on a broken bone – a temporary fix that couldn’t withstand the pressure of real competition.

So, in conclusion, foam rollers may provide some relief for jiu jitsu practitioners, but at the end of the day, it’s best to rely on good technique and hard training to keep the aches and pains at bay.

If you are noticing that some muscles are not playing along , it’s great to have the foam roller to help loosen those muscles up.
Foam rolling is a common tool utilized to treat tight muscles. This type of self-massage can help loosen tight muscles or help release those hard to get to trigger points.

Foam rolling can be uncomfortable, but similarly to massage guns, it can help improve muscle length in the short term. (4 Ways to Treat Tight Muscles)

Jiu Jitsu Gi:

The Gi is the traditional uniform worn in Jiu Jitsu. It is important to have a good quality Gi that is comfortable to wear and can withstand the stress of grappling. Look for a Gi that fits well and is made of durable material.

Jiu Jitsu gis are like the superhero costumes of the martial arts world. Just like how Spider-Man’s red and blue tights give him super powers, a jiu jitsu gi can make you feel like you can conquer the world (or at least the mat).

Take for example, my training partner “Samantha”. She was a relatively new practitioner, but the minute she put on her first gi, she transformed into a grappling machine. The gi seemed to give her an extra boost of confidence, and she was soon submitting opponents left and right.

But the real test came when she decided to wash her gi. Now, if you’ve ever washed a jiu jitsu gi, you know that it’s a delicate process. One wrong move and your once stiff and sturdy gi becomes a limp and floppy mess. Samantha learned this the hard way when she tried to wash her gi in hot water, shrinking it to the size of a child’s onesie.

She still tried to train in her tiny gi, but every time she tried to move, she felt like a sausage trying to escape its casing. It was then that she realized jiu jitsu gis are like Cinderella’s glass slippers – they may make you feel like a prince or princess, but one wrong move and they turn back into a pumpkin (or a shrunken mess).

So, in conclusion, jiu jitsu gis are a crucial part of the sport, providing both protection and confidence to practitioners. Just make sure you wash your gi with care, or you may end up with a gi that’s more suited for a doll than a human.

Jiu Jitsu Belt:

Your belt represents your rank in Jiu Jitsu, so it’s important to have a sturdy and well-made belt that can withstand the wear and tear of training. Look for a belt that is made of high-quality cotton and has a sturdy buckle.

Jiu Jitsu belts are like the mood rings of the martial arts world. Just like how a mood ring changes color based on your emotions, a jiu jitsu belt can change in significance based on the wearer’s skill level.

Take for example, my training partner “Tom”. Tom was a white belt, and his jiu jitsu belt was a symbol of his innocence and inexperience. But as he trained and grew in skill, his belt began to darken, much like a chameleon adapting to its surroundings.

As Tom progressed through the ranks, his belt became a symbol of his hard work and dedication. It was like a medal of honor, marking his journey from a jiu jitsu novice to a seasoned veteran.

However, the real test came when Tom faced his toughest opponent yet – the laundry machine. You see, jiu jitsu belts are like the Energizer Bunny – they just keep going and going. But when they finally run out of steam, they can be a real pain to revive.

Tom learned this the hard way when he accidentally shrunk his belt in the wash. It was now so tight, he felt like he was wearing a tourniquet instead of a belt. It was then that he realized jiu jitsu belts are like the phoenix – they may rise from the ashes, but sometimes they need a little help to do so.

So, in conclusion, jiu jitsu belts are an integral part of the sport, marking a practitioner’s progress and achievements. Just make sure to treat them with care, or you may end up with a belt that’s more suited for a napkin than a martial artist.

Bjj Mouthguard:

Protecting your teeth and jaw is essential in any contact sport, and Jiu Jitsu is no exception. A mouthguard will help you avoid injury and keep you comfortable while you train.

Jiu Jitsu mouth guards are like the clown noses of the martial arts world. Just like how a clown nose adds a touch of humor to an outfit, a jiu jitsu mouth guard adds a touch of absurdity to a practitioner’s appearance.

Take for example, my training partner let’s call her “Jane”. Jane was a fierce competitor, known for her quick submissions and lightning-fast reflexes. But the minute she put on her mouth guard, she transformed into a character straight out of a cartoon.

Every time she tried to speak, her words were muffled and garbled, making her sound like she was trying to talk with a mouthful of marbles. And every time she smiled, her mouth guard would shift, making her look like she had a permanent lisp.

But the real test came when she faced her toughest opponent yet – herself. You see, jiu jitsu mouth guards are like the security guards of the mouth – they protect your teeth from harm, but sometimes they make it hard for you to communicate.

Jane learned this the hard way when she tried to tell her training partner a joke during a break. Her words were so garbled, her partner thought she was having a stroke. It was then that she realized jiu jitsu mouth guards are like the mask of Zorro – they may protect your identity, but sometimes they make it hard for others to understand you.

So, in conclusion, jiu jitsu mouth guards are a crucial part of the sport, providing protection for a practitioner’s teeth and mouth. Just make sure to choose one that’s comfortable and allows you to speak clearly, or you may end up looking like a clown in a grappling competition.

Rashguard:

A rashguard is a form-fitting shirt that is worn under the Gi to prevent skin irritation and chafing. Rashguards are made of moisture-wicking material that helps keep you cool and dry during training.

Spats:

Spats are form-fitting pants that are worn under the Gi pants to provide additional protection and support. They are often made of a stretchy material that moves with your body and helps prevent injury.

Water bottle:

Staying hydrated is important for any athlete, and it is especially important in Jiu Jitsu, where the intensity of the training can be high. A water bottle will allow you to stay hydrated during training and ensure that you are able to perform at your best.

Towel & Showerbag: A towel is a must-have item for any athlete. It will help you dry off after training, clean up sweat, and provide a place to sit if the mat is dirty.

In conclusion, having the right gear in your Jiu Jitsu bag is essential for a successful training session. By investing in high-quality Gi, belt, mouthguard, rashguard, spats, water bottle, and towel, you can ensure that you have everything you need to perform at your best and avoid injury.

  1. THE BEST. I use this for many body parts including arms, legs, abs, neck and back, but mostly my back and IT bands. It has a hard inner core that does not allow the foam to compress over time. My sons and husband have used it and really love that it doesn’t “smoosh” down due to their weight. Worth the price! The benefits are numerous. I have a couple of regular foam rollers, and while I tried to buy the hardest foam available at the time, they do not compare to this one.

  2. Perfect size. Easily fits my 32 ounce shampoo, conditioner, and soap, along with my face regimine, toothbrush, toothpaste, large bottle of mouthwash, and battery operated face brush, with room to spare. Color is exactly as shown (I ordered black), conveniently folds down for packing. All mesh, except for seam reinforcement and handle. I absolutely recommend this caddy.

  3. Great!!! The Venum Contender 2.0 BJJ Gi did not disappoint! The set has such nice quality. As soon as I got it I knew it would be great. My son is incredibly interested in practicing her fighting skills, especially with boxing and jiu jitsu overall. This set was something I knew would make him happy! The set is rich in color, and doesn’t feel cheap in general. The material wasn’t very heavy, and it was light enough to work out in it. It doesn’t itch your skin when it’s on the body, and it’s pretty soft compared to other uniforms. Obviously, this uniform is incredibly durable and lightweight. The pants and the jacket are also made of cotton, which is super soft and nice overall! The color doesn’t seem to be dulling after a few washes which is also a great sign. It looks very professional and it’s amazing! When my son tried it on, he said it was comfortable and didn’t itch at all. Another thing I like about this product is the reinforced foam collar. This addition helps counter attacks and resist grips overall! If you want a uniform set that’s reliable, lightweight, durable, and comfy, this is definitely the set for you. I highly recommend this product.

  4. Soft and great color. I got the Venum Contender 2.0 BJJ GI in the blue. This is my favorite blue, the color is bright and vibrant, exactly how it looks like online. This is the second version of their Venum BJJ Contender Gi line. I have never tried out their first version, so I cannot compare, but it is advertised to be more durable and comfortable than the first model. The front definitely feels very durable, the collar is reinforced with EVA foam. The material is soft and comfortable. The jacket is made of 100% Pearl Weave Cotton and the pants are 100% cotton and are reinforced inside of the leg and ankle cuffs. The whole outfit is just very well made. Thank goodness the material did not make me itch and is very soft. Like any clothing or uniforms with vibrant colors, to make it last, I usually wash it in cold gentle cycle so the colors do not fade, so far the color has been holding up well. I got the size A2 and it fits perfectly. Definitely check the sizing chart to make sure you get the correct size. For size A2, according to the company, it is for 5’7” to 5’10” and between 155 lbs to 170 lbs. Not every website posts the sizing chart, so I have posted a photo with the sizing chart from my package. Hope that helps give you an idea of which size to get.

  5. Unique Size. You can’t go wrong with a Venum Gi and this one being an A2.5 is a first. I have never seen half sizes in gi’s before and I think this idea is a long time coming. It really bridges the gap between either having to hang your gi wet so as not to shrink it, or drying in hot heat so that it shrinks just enough to fit better. LOVE the idea of this half sizing. The material is lightweight and the collar is sturdy. Again, you can’t go wrong with a Venum Gi! But the half sizes, I cannot say enough about it!

  6. Good flexibility in the material. I’m average/slim build in body type. I am 5 feet 10 inches tall and 165 pounds. I got the size A2.5, I should have gotten the A2, it probably would have fit better. The waist on the pants were larger than anticipated. The length was just right. There is a rope belt on the pants. (No buttons or zippers, just the belt.) The pants open very large around the waist. The belt is cotton and no matter how tight I tie them, they kept slipping looser. The body of the pant allows for proper mobility in all kicking positions. The pants are reinforced inside of the leg and ankles
The jacket and pants are 100% cotton. The fabric is breathable and is very comfortable.
The logo and letter stitching on the jacket are embroidered through the fabric rather than screen printed or iron on. The collar is very stiff with multiple lows of stitching for durability and to hold its shape. The sleeves are about half an inch longer than they should be. There is too much play in the shape of the shoulder. However, the shape of the arms are such that allow for good mobility in all hitting position. The length of the jacket is a little short for the position of the belt. When moving, it comes up.

  7. Comfy gi. My husband like Venum products, so when he was looking for a new gi, of course he wanted to try Venum gi. He was happy when I received this Venum Contender 2.0 BJJ GI. This is the second version of their Venum BJJ Contender Gi, more durable and comfortable than the previous model. The jacket is 100% pearl weave cotton with reinforced seams. The collar is reinforced with EVA foam to help you resist grips and help counter the attacks of your opponents. The pants are 100% cotton and are reinforced inside of the leg and ankle cuffs. It is true to size. It is definitely more comfortable and softer than traditional gis. It is lightweight but at the same time it is very sturdy. This gi is blue with white “Venum” logo on the front of the jacket and a snake head in the back. Overall it is a good gi and it is definitely recommended.

  8. Beautiful. My husband received the venum contender 2.0 BJJ GI on the behalf of spark reviewer. I love the color blue on this GI. When my husband put the GI on he said it was very comfortable. The jacket is 100% pearl weave cotton, the pants are 100% cotton.

  10. Best roller! I’ve tried lots of rollers and this is by far the best. It’s super high quality and the firmness is perfect. The grooves allow me to get in tough muscle trigger points. I love this roller so much I bought a second for my sister!

  12. Life saver during Quarantine 2020. I have always used the the rollers provided at my gym, so when the gyms closed for the pandemic I was frantically trying to find one that was well priced and worked. I got lucky with finding this item as it’s strong enough to support my 220 Lbs everyday. Highly recommend this as a travel companion as well since it’s not too large and can fit in a back pack

  13. Excellent & highly recommend. Excellent quality. This is so solid and most on the market dont have a solid core but this one does. Our neighbor let us borrow his for stretching a back strain & we bought our own the next day! Takes a little practice but so worth it

  14. The “Goldilocks” roller — just right. Just the right size (not too long, not too short), just the right firmness (not too hard, not too soft). Attractive and inconspicuous; easy to stick in a corner, a closet.

  15. A shower caddy that deserves applause! Great for all your bathroom toilet needs. My son put all of his items in it to take to the showers. Makes life easy! Priced well

  16. Hurts so good! I decided to try this massage roller after a long bike ride. My legs were tired and sore and this roller really helped get the lactic acid moving. I have tried out many massage and foam rollers over the years. I was impressed by the solid construction and variety of tread type this one offered. I’ll be using this one from now on.

  17. Too hard. I’m reviewing the Athletic Works Deep Massage Roller.
I have never had one so I have nothing to compare it too. Diameter is 5.5 inches diameter x 18 inches long. I tried several times to use it. My daughter was visiting when it arrived. She does CrossFit and had trouble using it.
It has wide and narrow textures with firm and rigid hollow on inner core. It would be easier to use if there were handles on each end. It would be better if it was softer. Unless a person is in great shape it would be hard to use.

  18. Perfect for integrating into your yoga routine! A couple years back I began to visit a chiropractor for intermittent back pain and he suggested I try doing yoga, so I purchased a few things to get going. I bought a mat and blocks but put off getting a deep tissue massaging roller. I’m glad I did because I wouldn’t have known how great this could be.
I love the color of it, the soft edges of the varied raised ribs, and sturdiness of this deep tissue massage roller.
It’s not flimsy and doesn’t bend even when placing my full weight on it. I use it for my back and legs, but you could use this for so many more things other than yoga.
It’s got some weight to it so it doesn’t feel cheap or weak.
My cats also love it as you’ll see in the included photos. It’s a semi hard rubber so it’s not uncomfortable and doesn’t bite into your skin or pinch.
I’m so glad I waited because I may not have made a good choice or would possibly have been overcharged for one of this quality.
Well worth purchasing for yourself! I whole heartedly recommend this to anyone with back pain, even if you don’t decide yoga is for you.

  19. Very good but need to know how to use. I like it very much. My back was a little bit sore and this roller helped relieve the soreness almost instantly.
I wish there was a link for videos showing how to use it because when I went to check on YouTube, some videos and on the wrap paper, it said that I should consult with a health care professional because some moves might not be suited depending on your health conditions.

  20. Works great. I really enjoyed using this massage roller. It works perfectly under your feet and and your calves when you have a long day. The various different raised bumps help massage your muscles. I would recommend this to a friend. The only problem that I have is it’s very heavy so it’s hard to lift up and move around especially if you’re weak because you’re older or you’re not feeling well. I would say it’s probly 6 pounds just a roller by itself. I would still recommend this product.

  21. Very stiff rubber roller with a nice raised surfac. Very nice roller. Compact and hollow core. I use a wooden 24 inch baker’s roller to roll on my client easily.
It may be too stiff to some. Thus you can add a piece of foam sponge or sheepskin cloth secured around the tube.

  22. Great roller for after any workout! This roller is well designed and durable. It has a rigid inner tube to hold the shape of the roller and will hold up well during stretching or an after workout tuneup. It feels built to last and comparing it to my other rulers, is vastly superior in both quality and ability!

  23. Athletic Works For Me! The Athletic Works 18″x5.5″ Massage Roller provides really Works! The roller assists with providing a firm compression. With the wide and narrow exterior textures, it actually almost feels like a deep tissue kind of sports massage. I love it! I have been using this product only on my back so far but it can definitely be used to roll out your calves, lats, glutes, and quads. The pattern on the outside of the roller is ideal for rolling through tight muscles, knots, and kinks. It may help to break up the lactic acid in order to accelerate muscle recovery. I have noticed that it truly helps to relieve pain and pressure in my tight / sore back muscles. Not only do the pressure points feel really good, but this massage roller may allow for improvement of your flexibility, balance, and mobility. The exterior of the product is made with a very dense type of foam (that does not flatten) over a firm and rigid hollow core. It is sturdy, durable, and able to hold my weight while still maintaining its shape. It is also very easy to clean – spot clean with a damp cloth. I would highly recommend this product.

  24. Great Relief Roller. Great quality, hard rubber, black, smooth rollers for massages, the Athletic Works Massage Roller for muscles is a great addition to start or end your workout. The small nodes are made of a medium density foam. They are hard enough to provide relief for your aching muscles with a deep tissue massage. The rolling technique will help you loosen your overworked muscles, especially for beginners when stretching before and after your workouts. By using this Athletic Works Massage Roller as part of your daily routine, the different geometric patterns will help stretching and softening your tissues for maximum relief.

  25. Sturdier than I expected. This Athletic Works 18″x5.5″ Massage Roller is sturdier than I expected. My husband is a cyclist and was using another muscle roller that had moving bead like parts but was not getting relief. The size of this roller is the key, it’s wide enough to use on your hip but small enough to use on your calf. After bike riding sometimes up to 50 miles in one day, his leg muscles are tired. A few minutes with this roller relieves the pain.
It stores upright in our closet and does not take up much space. The different shapes and sizes of the protrusions work for making the pressure stronger or lighter on your muscle. If you are not savvy on using on of these, there are so many videos online to show you how to get relief.
He used this roller by moving his leg over the roller, you don’t really need to use any hands like the other muscle rollers with moving bead like parts. This roller you can use yourself, alone. I would recommend this to anyone who spends a lot of time on their feet with tired leg muscles. After massaging yourself you will feel the stiffness go away.

It came in no box just exposed blue roller to all elements surfaces etc. the shipping label was stuck to the product label that fell off like a donut. Can’t believe it actually made it to my house at all. There were some dirty areas but no abrasions to the blue surface. Would not order again from same company.

  29. not tall enough. not tall enough for full sized shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, or body wash. not wide enough to hold all that either. a fill sized toothbrush will not fit. if you prefer smaller bottles and are just going away for the weekend, this is great for you. if you are going away for more than that or you don’t want to purchase travel sized toiletries…get something else. it’s not bad quality, just too small. had to make due with this until my Amazon order came.

It is the best: more room than you expect, well-organized, the most compartments, even on the sides-and they zip, some mesh compartments to let toothbrushes, etc. dry, essential hook for easy access, folds up to make more room or tuck into bag. A must have for everyday or emergency use in the car, van, or camping. I use mine on the train.
